Biography of Heinz Fischer

Heinz Fischer was an Austrian statesman and politician. Born on October 9, 1938, in Graz, he pursued a career in law. In 1963, Fischer began his political career as the secretary of the parliamentary faction of the Social Democrats, eventually becoming its leader.

In 1990, Fischer was elected as the first chairman of the parliament, a position he held for 12 years. During his tenure, he demonstrated a remarkable ability to find compromises and resolve conflicts between factions, earning him the nickname "Uncle Solomon" in the parliament. Fischer's main distinguishing features were his modesty and caution, as he always avoided making rash statements or impulsive actions.

Although he admitted to shooting street lamps with a slingshot in his childhood, for which his father had to pay fines, Fischer was known for his responsible and thoughtful behavior. His hobbies included mountaineering, and he had a passion for music, particularly jazz.

Fischer was married to Margit for 35 years, and together they raised a son and a daughter. Their city apartment became the personal residence of the new president. Notably, Fischer declined to have an official residence at the expense of the state.
