François-Antoine de Carrion-Nizas

Early Life and Involvement in the Revolution

François-Antoine de Carrion-Nizas, a French political figure and writer, was born into a noble family. He became the Marquis de Carrion-Nizas and a recipient of the Legion of Honor. During the French Revolution, he served as mayor of the commune of Lézignan-la-Cébe from 1790 to 1792. Carrion-Nizas initially supported the Revolution, but during the Reign of Terror, he was arrested for his federalist views. After the fall of Robespierre, he was released from prison.

Political Career under Napoleon

Carrion-Nizas's willingness to cooperate with Napoleon as a member of the Tribunate earned him disapproval. His plays, "Montmorency" and "Pierre-le-Grand" (1803 and 1804), met with little success. During Napoleon's 1813 campaign, Carrion-Nizas was commissioned to keep a journal of the expedition.

Military Service and Arrest after Waterloo

After the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, Carrion-Nizas led the defense of Sèvres and Saint-Cloud against an enemy force three times larger. Following the Second Restoration, he was arrested but pardoned in 1817.

Return to Politics and Literary Pursuits

Upon his release, Carrion-Nizas dedicated himself almost exclusively to literature. After the July Revolution of 1830, he briefly served in the War Department. He also authored several works, including "Organisation de la force armée en France" (1817) and "Essai sur l'histoire générale de l'art militaire" (1823).

Legacy

Carrion-Nizas is remembered as a political figure and writer who navigated the turbulent waters of the French Revolution and Napoleonic era. His political support for Napoleon and his subsequent military service during the Restoration demonstrate his adaptability and resilience. His literary contributions on military strategy and history further solidified his legacy as a man of letters.
