Prince Louis II de Bourbon

Early Life and Royal Lineage

Louis II de Bourbon was born into a prominent French royal family, the House of Bourbon. His father, Prince Henry I de Bourbon, died shortly after his birth, making him the third Prince de Condé. He inherited the title of Duke of Enghien in 1588.

Marriage and Royal Intrigue

In 1609, Louis married Charlotte-Marguerite de Montmorency. Their union became a source of intrigue when King Henry IV pursued his wife. Forced to flee the country, Louis eventually returned and had three children with Charlotte-Marguerite: two daughters and a son who would later become known as the Great Condé.

The Fronde

Louis's children played key roles in the Fronde, a period of civil unrest in France. His daughter, Anne Geneviève, married Henri II d'Orléans, Duke of Longueville, while his son, Louis II de Bourbon, became the fourth Duke of Enghien and a renowned military commander.

Louis's Political Views

Louis's political views are perhaps best summarized by a famous anecdote. He once described a medal with the profile of King Louis XIII on one side and Cardinal Richelieu on the other, noting that "the King of France and Navarre can do nothing without the advice of Cardinal Richelieu."

Legacy

Louis II de Bourbon, Prince de Condé, left a mixed legacy. According to François de La Rochefoucauld, he was "a great politician, an excellent courtier, but more concerned with his personal affairs than with those of the state." However, his son's military prowess and the role of his children in the Fronde ensured that his lineage would continue to play a significant role in French history.
