Biography of Hilda Konetzni

Hilda Konetzni was an Austrian opera singer (soprano) best known for her roles in Wagner's operas, particularly the role of Sieglinde. She primarily performed at the Vienna State Opera.

Early Life and Education

Hilda Konetzni was born on March 21, 1905, in Vienna. She was three years younger than her sister, Anny Konetzni, who was also a soprano. Like her sister, Hilda studied vocal performance at the Vienna Conservatory and took private lessons in Prague.

Operatic Career

Hilda Konetzni made her debut in 1929 at the Chemnitz Opera, where she performed the role of Sieglinde in Richard Wagner's "Die Walküre" while Anny sang the role of Brünnhilde. She joined the German Theater in Prague in 1932 and became a regular opera singer at the Vienna State Opera in 1936.

Collaborating closely with the Vienna State Opera, Konetzni gradually gained recognition in Europe and performed at La Scala, Covent Garden, Salzburg, and also worked in the United States. It is commonly believed that Hilda had a slightly less powerful voice compared to Anny, but her vocal qualities were more refined. Taking advantage of this, Hilda excelled in Mozart's operas and delighted the audience with her performances in "Die Zauberflöte" and "Don Giovanni" at Covent Garden.

Artistic Achievements

The younger of the Konetzni sisters earned an excellent reputation by taking on roles in opera projects by Richard Strauss and Wagner. However, she was particularly acclaimed for her portrayal of Sieglinde in Wagner's "Der Ring des Nibelungen" and Elisabeth in "Tannhäuser". Anny retired from the stage in 1955, but Hilda continued to perform until the 1960s, albeit with less frequency.

In 1954, Hilda Konetzni took a position on the faculty of the Vienna Academy. She remained popular in Vienna and continued to sing smaller roles until the 1970s. Among the other heroines she portrayed were Agathe, Isolde, Leonore, Marschallin, Chrysothemis, and more.

Later Years and Death

Hilda Konetzni passed away on April 20, 1980, in Vienna, outliving her sister Anny by 12 years.
