Biography of Hun Sen
Hun Sen, the current Prime Minister of Cambodia, was born on August 5, 1952, in the province of Kampong Cham, into a peasant family. He received his education in Phnom Penh and later graduated from the Higher Party School in Hanoi.
Political Career
In the 1970s and 1975, Hun Sen actively participated in the fight against the pro-American Lon Nol regime. During this time, he sustained five injuries and lost his left eye in one of the battles. In 1979, at the age of 33, he entered the government and became the youngest prime minister in the country's history.
Leadership of Cambodia
Hun Sen has been at the helm of Cambodia's government for almost twenty years. In the parliamentary elections that took place on July 31, his party, the Cambodian People's Party, emerged as the winner, securing 70 out of 123 seats in the National Assembly. They displaced the royalist party, led by the son of the current Cambodian king, Norodom Sihamoni, to the second position. However, analysts believe that the balance of power between the People's Party and the royalists remains fragile.
Family
Hun Sen's wife, Bun Rany, is the President of the National Committee of the Red Cross. They have a son named Hun Manet, who is 17 years old and is the first Cambodian to study at the prestigious United States Military Academy at West Point.
