Biography of Khurshudbanu Mehti Qizi Natavan

Khurshudbanu Mehti Qizi Natavan was an Azerbaijani poetess, commonly known as Khan Kizi, which means "daughter of a Khan". She was born in August 1832 in the city of Shusha, which is now part of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. Natavan received her education at home and became the leader of the literary circle called "Majlis-i Uns" or "Gathering of Friends" in Shusha. This circle had creative connections with similar circles in other cities of Azerbaijan.

As a poetess, Natavan wrote lyrical poems, mostly inspired by the sadness of losing her son at a young age. Some of her famous works include "I Weep" and "He is Gone", which not only expressed her grief but also touched upon social issues, particularly the oppression of women in society.

Natavan passed away on October 2, 1897, in Shusha. She left behind a significant body of work that continues to be celebrated and appreciated in Azerbaijani literature. Her poetry reflects both personal emotions and societal concerns, making her a prominent figure in Azerbaijani literature and a voice for women's rights.
