Early Life and Education

Hüseyin Özyeğin was born in İzmir, Turkey, in 1944. He graduated from Robert College in Istanbul in 1963 and went on to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering at Oregon State University in Corvallis. With a keen interest in finance, he later earned an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Banking Career

Returning to Turkey after three years abroad, Özyeğin joined Pamukbank, a bank owned by his former schoolmate Mehmet Emin Karamehmet. He quickly rose through the ranks and became the bank's general manager at the age of 32 in 1970, a position he held until 1984.

Establishment of Finansbank and Fiba Holding

In 1984, Özyeğin became the general manager of Yapı ve Kredi Bankası, another of Karamehmet's banks. He held this position until 1987, when the idea of starting his own venture came to fruition. He founded Finansbank, which later expanded to include approximately 200 branches, primarily in Europe. He subsequently established several investment companies, consolidating them into Fiba Holding, an organization employing 8,500 people in 20 separate units.

Expansion and Recognition

In 2005, Özyeğin sold the GIMA retail chain and used the proceeds to acquire the Swissotel in Istanbul. In April 2006, he sold a 46% stake in Finansbank to the National Bank of Greece, the oldest and most respected commercial bank in Greece.

In recognition of his outstanding achievements, Özyeğin was named "Businessman of the Year" by the Turkish magazine "Ekonomist" in 2000. He remains a prominent figure in Turkey, respected by both the public and his business counterparts.
