Biography of Bogdan Filov

Bogdan Dimitrov Filov (April 9, 1883 – February 2, 1945) was a Bulgarian archaeologist, art historian, and politician. He made significant contributions to the study of ancient art in Bulgaria. In 1938, he became the Minister of Education and in 1940, he became the Prime Minister. Under his leadership, Bulgaria joined World War II on the side of Nazi Germany. From 1937 to 1944, he also held the position of President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. He served as the Prime Minister of Bulgaria in the 57th and 58th governments (1940-1943), as well as the regent during the reign of the underage King Simeon II (1943-1944). He resigned a few days before the communist coup and was arrested, deported to the USSR, and executed along with many other Bulgarian politicians. He was posthumously rehabilitated by decision number 172 of the Supreme Court of Bulgaria in 1996.
