Early Life and EducationIndrek Toome was born in 1949 to a working-class family in Estonia. In 1968, he graduated from Tallinn Polytechnic Institute (now Tallinn Technical University) as an electrical engineer.
Political Career
From 1972 to 1990, Toome held various leadership positions in the Komsomol (communist youth organizations) and the Communist Party of Estonia. On November 16, 1988, he became the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Estonian SSR, leading the government during the "Singing Revolution," a period of rising nationalist sentiment.
Head of Government
As head of government, Toome's administration faced pressure from the pro-independence movement. On April 3, 1990, following the dissolution of Soviet power in Estonia, Toome handed over power to the democratically elected Prime Minister, Edgar Savisaar.
Post-Political Career
After leaving politics, Toome became a partner in a real estate company. In 1995, he was convicted of attempted bribery and fined. Toome remained active in business before retiring.
Personal Life
Indrek Toome was married and had three adult sons, including Marek, a rally car driver. His nephew, Koit Toome, is a renowned Estonian singer. Toome passed away in 2019 and was buried in Rahumäe Cemetery in Tallinn.
