Ine Marie Eriksen Søreide: A Norwegian Political Trailblazer
Early Life and EducationIne Marie Eriksen Søreide was born on May 2, 1976, in Lørenskog, Norway. Her parents were Egil Eriksen, an electrician, and Wenche Irene Hansen, a secretary. She attended various schools in Lørenskog and Tromsø, completing her secondary education at Tromsdalen Upper Secondary School in 1995. Thereafter, she pursued law at the University of Tromsø, graduating with a Master of Laws degree in 2007. In 2010, she undertook a course at the Norwegian Defense University College.
Early Career and Political Beginnings
During her university years, Søreide joined the Conservative Party and became involved in local politics. She served as deputy member of the Tromsø Municipal Council from 1995 to 1999. Concurrently, she held leadership roles in the Conservative Party's youth organization, culminating in her appointment as chairperson in 2000. She also joined the Conservative Party's central executive committee that same year.
Parliamentary Career
Søreide first ran for parliament in 1997 and 2001, but was unsuccessful. She served as a substitute member for Minister of Finance Per-Kristian Foss in the Storting (Norwegian Parliament). In 2005, she was finally elected as a full member of the Storting, representing Oslo. She has been re-elected several times since.
Ministerial Appointments
In 2013, Søreide became Minister of Defense in the first Solberg cabinet. In 2017, she became the first female Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway in the second Solberg cabinet. She held this position until October 14, 2021.
Other Engagements
Søreide has been active in various organizations and initiatives. She served as a member of the Norwegian-German Willy Brandt Foundation and the United Nations General Assembly. She was awarded the European of the Year award by the European Youth of Norway in 2019.
Personal Life
Ine Marie Eriksen Søreide married Øystein Søreide in 2006. They have one daughter.
