Beatification
Father Innocenty Bocheński was beatified on June 13, 1999, by Pope John Paul II as one of the 108 Blessed Polish Martyrs of World War II. His feast day is celebrated on June 12.
Early Life and Education
Father Bocheński entered the Conventual Franciscan Order on August 25, 1908, taking the religious name of Innocent. He pursued theological and philosophical studies in Krakow and was ordained a priest in 1924.
Pastoral Ministry
After his ordination, Father Bocheński served in Franciscan parishes near the city of Lviv, Ukraine. In 1933, he met with Saint Maximilian Kolbe and spent several years at the Marian pilgrimage center of Niepokalanów, Poland. In 1939, he was transferred to Grodno, where he served as the financial administrator and confessor at the Franciscan monastery.
Martyrdom
After the annexation of western Belarus by the Soviet Union, Father Bocheński was placed under house arrest in the village of Adamowicze. On March 21, 1940, he attempted to cross the Polish-German border into German-occupied Poland, but was apprehended and imprisoned in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. He died in the camp on June 6, 1940.
