Iraqli Batiashvili is a prominent Georgian politician who has played a significant role in the country's political landscape.
Early Activism
During the Soviet era, Batiashvili was an active dissident. In the late 1980s, he became a key figure in the movement for Georgia's independence from the USSR. In 1989, he signed an appeal calling for anti-Ossetian demonstrations, leading to a violent confrontation in the capital of South Ossetia.
Political Career
After Georgia gained independence, Batiashvili joined the Republican Party of Georgia and the opposition party "Forward Georgia." He became a member of Parliament from 1995 to 1999 and again from 1999 to 2004. In 1995, he was appointed head of the Georgian State Security Service by President Eduard Shevardnadze.
Involvement in the Kodiri Gorge Crisis
In 2006, Batiashvili was arrested and charged with treason for his alleged support of Emzar Kvitsiani, the rebellious governor of the Kodiri Gorge. Phone recordings were released, allegedly showing Batiashvili encouraging Kvitsiani to resist the government. Batiashvili claimed the recordings were doctored.
Imprisonment and Release
In 2007, a court convicted Batiashvili of "intellectual support" for Kvitsiani's actions and sentenced him to seven years in prison. Supporters condemned the conviction as politically motivated and labeled Batiashvili a "political prisoner." After pressure from the Georgian Orthodox Church, he was pardoned and released in January 2008.
Activism and Controversy
Batiashvili has remained active in Georgian politics, criticizing the government and advocating for political reform. He has also been involved in a number of controversial events, including allegations of involvement in a 2005 assassination attempt and his arrest in 2007 on charges of inciting violence during a protest.
