Early Life and Education

Irina Nikolaevna Blokhina was born on April 21, 1921, into a family of a rural doctor. After graduating from the Nizhny Novgorod (Gorky) Medical Institute in 1942, she chose to pursue microbiology, unlike her elder brother, who became a prominent surgeon and President of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences.

Academic Career

As an academic, Blokhina authored six monographs and over 150 scientific articles in the fields of microbiology, epidemiology, and immunology. In collaboration with Academician A.N. Belozersky, she established the nation's first laboratory for bacterial genosystematics at her institute. Her work contributed significantly to the development of therapeutic and preventive immunobiological products, such as intravenous immunoglobulin for children, lactobacterin, and ecolact.

Public Service

Blokhina's influence extended beyond academia. From 1974 to 1989, she served as Chairwoman of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR Commission on Healthcare and Social Security. She played a pivotal role in the women's movement as a member of the Committee of Soviet Women from 1968 to 1988. In the 1990s, she led the Nizhny Novgorod branch of the Russian Foundation for Human Health.

Cholera Outbreak and Legacy

During the 1980s, Blokhina actively participated in the suppression of cholera outbreaks in the USSR. Her dedication to public health and scientific advancement earned her the prestigious title of "Honorary Citizen of Nizhny Novgorod" in 1996.

Honors and Recognition

Blokhina's contributions were widely recognized. She was awarded the State Prize of the USSR and elected as an academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. Her legacy continues to inspire and guide researchers in the fields of microbiology and immunology.
