Early Life and Family Background

Ivan Rom-Lebedev, a renowned Soviet actor, playwright, and guitarist, was born into a family with strong artistic roots. His father, Ivan Lebedev, conducted the Moscow Gypsy Choir, while his mother sang in the same choir. Despite her Russian ethnicity, she embraced the Gypsy culture. Young Ivan's early years were spent in his grandfather's house in Vilnius, where he was raised alongside two other children.

Education and Early Experiences

Lebedev received a privileged upbringing in a spacious five-room apartment with servants, thanks to the popularity of Gypsy choirs. He was enrolled in a gymnasium but his childhood took an unexpected turn shortly after the Russian Revolution. At the age of 15, he left home and engaged in vagabondage according to official accounts. However, ethnographer Nikolai Bessonov suggested that Lebedev may have joined the White Army.

Military Service and the Birth of "Romén"

Regardless of his past, Lebedev joined the Red Army and served for three years. Upon demobilization, he became a guitarist in a youth Gypsy ensemble. In 1930, he co-founded the Gypsy theater studio. The studio officially became a theater in December 1931, giving rise to the renowned "Romén" Theater. From that moment forward, Ivan Rom-Lebedev dedicated his life to this Gypsy institution.

Contributions to the Gypsy Theater

Rom-Lebedev's work at "Romén" extended far beyond acting. He wrote dozens of plays, some of which continue to be performed today. He also played the guitar and embraced his Gypsy heritage by adding "Rom" (meaning "Gypsy") to his surname. In 1947, he became a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and received the title of Honored Artist of the RSFSR.

Later Years and Legacy

In his later years, Rom-Lebedev penned his autobiography, "From Gypsy Choir to 'Romén' Theater," which was published in 1990. His achievements in the Gypsy theater world were profound: he was one of its founders, a leading actor, and a prolific playwright. His plays have left an enduring legacy, capturing the essence of Gypsy culture and portraying the struggles and triumphs of its people.
