Biography of Ivan Veremey

Ivan Nikolaevich Veremey was a Soviet military figure, a major general of tank troops, and a Hero of the Soviet Union. He was awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner, the Order of the Patriotic War 1st and 2nd degrees, 2 Orders of the Red Star, as well as various medals and foreign orders.

Early Life and Career

Ivan Nikolaevich Veremey was born on February 23, 1915, in the village of Orlovka, Kulikovsky district, Chernigov region, in a working-class family. He was Ukrainian by nationality and became a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1939. After completing an incomplete secondary school, he worked as a locksmith at a factory in the Moscow region and later as the secretary of the Firovsky District Komsomol Committee in the Kalinin region.

In 1937, Veremey joined the Soviet Army and graduated from the military-political school in Kalinin. When the Great Patriotic War broke out, he served on the front lines. Veremey distinguished himself as a Guard lieutenant colonel during the Vistula-Oder Offensive.

Achievements in Battle

Under Veremey's command, his regiment engaged in battle with 40 enemy tanks, disabling 8 of them, near the city of Mikoluv, Poland, on the night of January 28, 1945. Throughout January 1945, his regiment destroyed a total of 26 enemy tanks and self-propelled guns, 17 field guns, 4 mortar batteries, 120 vehicles, and numerous enemy personnel.

For his remarkable bravery and leadership, Ivan Nikolaevich Veremey was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, along with the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal, on April 10, 1945.

Later Years

After the war, Veremey continued his service in the army. In 1953, he graduated from the General Staff Academy. From 1963, Major General Veremey served in the reserves. He lived in Kiev and worked as a senior engineer at one of the factories.

Throughout his career, Ivan Veremey was honored with the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner, the Order of the Patriotic War 1st and 2nd degrees, 2 Orders of the Red Star, as well as various medals and foreign orders.
