Ivo Sanader: From Scholar to Prime Minister
Early Life and EducationBorn on June 8, 1953, in Split, Croatia, Ivo Sanader hails from a humble Croatian family. After attending a Catholic school, he pursued philosophical studies at the University of Rome. However, he eventually returned home, realizing that philosophy was not his true calling.
Literary Career and Marriage
In 1978, Sanader married his wife, a student of archaeology. While pursuing a degree in literature at the University of Innsbruck, he established a column at the publishing house "Logos." He later rose to the position of editor.
Doctorate and Languages
Sanader earned a doctorate in philosophy and became proficient in numerous foreign languages, including English, French, German, and Italian.
Political Journey
In the late 1980s, Sanader embarked on a political career. He co-founded the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ). In 1992, he was elected to the Croatian Parliament and appointed Minister of Science.
Diplomatic Service
From 1993 to 1995 and 1996 to 2000, Sanader served as Deputy Foreign Minister.
Prime Ministership
In 2003, at the request of President Mesić, Sanader formed a government and became Prime Minister. The HDZ held 66 out of 152 seats in Parliament.
Achievements and Reforms
One of Sanader's significant achievements was curbing the glorification of Croatia's fascist movement, the Ustaše. He also implemented reforms in pharmaceuticals, medicine, and food safety.
