Jakob Caro

Jakob Caro was a German historian born in Gniezno, Poland, into a rabbi's family. After completing his Gymnasium in Poznań, he studied history and philosophy in Berlin and Leipzig.

Academic Career in Jena

In 1863, Caro joined the University of Jena as a Privatdozent in history. He embarked on archival research in Saint Petersburg and accompanied Grand Duchess Helena Pavlovna on her travels.

Return to Jena and Professorship in Breslau

In 1865, Caro returned to Jena but moved to the University of Breslau in 1869, where he became a professor. In 1886, he was elected a foreign corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences.
