Jahana Hayes: From Classroom to Congress

Early Life and Education

Jahana Hayes was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, and raised in nearby Naugatuck. She attended local public schools and graduated from Naugatuck High School. Hayes went on to earn a bachelor's degree in history and a master's degree in education from Southern Connecticut State University.

Teaching Career

Hayes began her teaching career in 2002 at John F. Kennedy Middle School in the town of Southington. She later taught social studies at Waterbury Arts Magnet School. Throughout her tenure as an educator, Hayes participated in numerous teaching competitions.

National Teacher of the Year

In 2016, Hayes made history by winning the National Teacher of the Year Award. As part of her year-long public service role, she traveled the country advocating for public education and teacher unions.

Political Career

In 2018, Hayes entered the Democratic primary for the U.S. House of Representatives seat in Connecticut's 5th Congressional District. She won the primary by a wide margin and went on to defeat Republican challenger Manny Santos in the general election.
