American Astronaut
American astronaut who completed two spaceflights on STS-28 in 1989 and STS-43 in 1991. He has logged over 3,000 flight hours on 30 different types of helicopters and airplanes.
NASA Career
From 1981 to 1992, he worked at the Johnson Space Center. During the early years of the Space Shuttle program, he served as a test pilot and aerodynamics specialist in Mission Control. He was also the lead flight director for Shuttle missions 5 through 11.
STS-28 Mission
From August 8 to 13, 1989, he flew as a mission specialist on STS-28, aboard the Columbia Space Shuttle. He became the 220th person, and the 131st American, to fly into space. The mission lasted for 5 days, 1 hour, 0 minutes, and 53 seconds.
STS-43 Mission
From August 2 to 11, 1991, he flew on his second spaceflight as a mission specialist on STS-43, aboard the Atlantis Space Shuttle. This mission lasted for 8 days, 21 hours, 22 minutes, and 25 seconds.
Personal Life
He is married to Ellen Adamson, and they have three children. His hobbies include skiing, long-distance running, hiking, hunting, and fishing. He also enjoys woodworking, is an accomplished machinist, and is a gunsmith.
