James M. Cox: American Politician and Business Tycoon

Early Life and Career

James M. Cox was born in 1870 in Jacksonburg, Ohio. After working as a schoolteacher, newspaper correspondent, editor, and aide to Congressman Paul Sorg, he became a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Ohio from 1909 to 1913.

First Gubernatorial Term

In 1913, Cox was elected Governor of Ohio, serving until 1915. He lost his bid for reelection in 1914 but triumphed again in 1916.

Second Gubernatorial Term

During his second term as Governor from 1917 to 1921, Cox gained a reputation as a skilled reformer.

Presidential Candidacy

In 1920, Cox was nominated as the Democratic candidate for President. However, he lost the election to Republican Warren Harding, receiving only 127 electoral votes compared to Harding's 404.

Post-Political Career

After leaving politics in 1921, Cox became head of the media conglomerate Cox Enterprises and owned several radio stations. In 1933, he served as vice-chairman of the American delegation to the London Economic Conference.

Later Years and Legacy

Cox passed away at his home in Kettering in 1957 at the age of 87. Throughout his life, he made significant contributions to American politics, media, and business.
