Jane Philpott: Former Health and Indigenous Services Minister of Canada

Jane Philpott is a Canadian politician who served as the Minister of Health from 2015 to 2017 and the Minister of Indigenous Services from 2017 to 2019. She was a member of the House of Commons of Canada for the Liberal Party from 2015 to 2019. Currently, she holds the position of Dean in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Queen's University in Kingston.

Early Life and Education

Jane Philpott was born in Toronto, Ontario, but spent her childhood in Winnipeg, Princeton, and Cambridge. Her father was a Presbyterian minister, while her mother worked as a schoolteacher. In 1984, Jane received her Medical Doctor degree (MD) with Distinction from the University of Western Ontario's medical school. Afterward, she earned a Master of Public Health degree from the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto.

Career

Philpott worked as a family physician in Markham—Stouffville from 1998 to 2015. From 2008 to 2014, she was the chief of family medicine at Markham Stouffville Hospital.

In April 2014, she was declared the Liberal Party's candidate for the upcoming federal election. On November 4, 2015, Philpott was appointed as the Minister of Health in Justin Trudeau's cabinet, becoming the first physician to hold the position.

Political Career

As Minister of Health, Philpott played a significant role in coordinating the government's efforts to resettle 25,000 Syrian refugees in Canada. She also served as a member of the Special Committee on the Northern Alberta Wildfires, a cabinet committee established to address the devastating wildfires that occurred in May 2016.

In a cabinet reshuffle in 2017, Philpott was appointed as the Minister of Indigenous Services, succeeding Ginette Petitpas Taylor as Minister of Health.

Philpott ran as an independent candidate in the 2019 election but was not elected to Parliament. In early 2020, she was named the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Queen's University in Kingston.

Personal Life

Jane Philpott is married to Pep Philpott, a journalist. They have four children.
