Ulrichs (or Uldis) Iekāns was born in Riga, Latvia. He graduated from the Riga Medical Institute in 1980, specializing in anesthesiology and resuscitation. Iekāns worked in several esteemed medical institutions, including the 1st Riga Hospital and the Gaiļezers Hospital. He also taught at the Medical School and served as the Director and then Chairman of the Board of the Latvian Maritime Medical Centre.
Political Beginnings
In 2001, Iekāns was elected to the Riga City Council as a member of the TB/LNKK coalition, leading its faction. He was re-elected in 2005, serving as the electoral list leader and mayoral candidate. In 2006, he became the Deputy Chairman of TB/LNKK.
Mayor of Riga
From 2007 to 2009, Iekāns served as the Mayor of Riga. During the handover ceremony in 2009, he famously refused to pass the traditional golden chain of office to his successor, Nils Ušakovs.
Legacy
Iekāns' tenure as Mayor of Riga was marked by a controversial stance on the Soviet past and his refusal to recognize the Russian language as an official language in the city. He remains a prominent figure in Latvian politics and is known for his outspoken views on nationalism and the role of the Russian minority in the country.
