Dirk Kempthorne, a Republican politician from Idaho, served as the 30th governor of Idaho from 1999 to 2006 and the 49th United States Secretary of the Interior from 2006 to 2009. His path to prominence began in Boise, where he made a significant impact on the local and national political landscape.

Early Life and Education

Dirk Kempthorne was born on October 29, 1951, in San Diego, California. He grew up in San Bernardino, where he attended San Gorgonio High School and later enrolled at San Bernardino Valley College. Kempthorne subsequently transferred to the University of Idaho, graduating in 1975 with a degree in political science.

Political Career: Boise Mayoralty and U.S. Senate

Kempthorne's political career gained momentum in 1985 when, at the age of 34, he was elected mayor of Boise, Idaho's capital city. He was re-elected unopposed in 1989. In 1992, Kempthorne emerged victorious in the U.S. Senate race, defeating Democratic candidate Steve Symms. He served six years in the Senate, from 1993 to 1999, where he notably advocated for revisions to the Safe Drinking Water Act.

Idaho Governorship: Education Focus

Instead of seeking re-election to the Senate, Kempthorne ran for governor of Idaho. He secured a landslide victory in 1999, winning 68% of the vote against Democrat Robert C. Huntley. Kempthorne was re-elected in 2002 with 56% of the vote. As governor, he prioritized children's issues, increasing funding for high schools, implementing a classroom computerization program, establishing a central immunization registry, and promoting early literacy initiatives.

Secretary of the Interior: Bush Administration

In March 2006, President George W. Bush nominated Kempthorne for the position of U.S. Secretary of the Interior. The nomination was confirmed by the Senate in May 2006. Kempthorne served as interior secretary until January 2009.

Post-Political Career

After leaving government, Kempthorne joined the American Council of Life Insurers (ACLI) in 2010 as its president and chief executive officer (CEO). He is married to Patricia Kempthorne and has two children.
