Early Life and Education
Major General Vasily Akhvlediani was born on April 7, 1852, in the village of Vani, Kutaisi Province, Georgia. He hailed from a Georgian noble family. Akhvlediani received his education at the Kutaisi Classical Gymnasium and the Tiflis Infantry Cadet School.
Military Career
In 1876, Akhvlediani was commissioned as a lieutenant in the army infantry. He served in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 on the Caucasus front. In 1900, he commanded the 253rd Grozny Reserve Battalion.
Russo-Japanese War
With the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese War, Akhvlediani was transferred to the 12th Siberian Barnaul Infantry Regiment. He distinguished himself in battle and was promoted to colonel. In 1905, he received the prestigious Order of St. George, 4th class.
Later Career
Subsequently, Akhvlediani commanded the 137th Nezhinsky Infantry Regiment and the 155th Kubinsky Infantry Regiment, while also serving as commandant of the Abbas-Tuman fortress. He was promoted to major general in 1911 and retired the following year.
Post-War Activities and Honors
After his retirement, Akhvlediani was awarded the Order of St. Vladimir, 4th class, the Order of St. Stanislav, 3rd class, and the Order of St. Anna, 3rd class. He served as the head of the Georgian Army Veterans' Home in Tiflis from 1918-1921.
Death and Legacy
Major General Akhvlediani passed away in Tbilisi on January 19, 1940, and was buried at the Kukia Cemetery. His son, Juvenali, served as a staff captain and was awarded the Order of St. George, 4th class, for his military exploits in World War I.
