BiographyEarly Career
General Campenon served as a staff officer in the Crimean War and the Austro-Italian War of 1859. During the Franco-Prussian War, he held the rank of colonel and was taken prisoner at the surrender of Metz.
Minister of War
Following the war, Campenon rose through the ranks, becoming a brigadier general in 1875 and a divisional general in 1880. Throughout the 1880s, he held the post of Minister of War three times: in 1881-1882 under Gambetta, 1883-1885 under Jules Ferry, and 1885-1886 under Brisson.
Later Career
In 1883, Campenon was elected as a life senator. His later career was marked by his continued involvement in military and political affairs.
