Jean Shepherd: A Multifaceted American Icon
Early Life and CareerJean Shepherd was born in South Chicago, Illinois, and raised in Hammond, Indiana. After working as a postal clerk in a steel mill, he received his radio license at a young age. During World War II, he served in the signal corps.
Shepherd began his radio career in 1948 at WSAI in Cincinnati. He moved on to KYW in Philadelphia from 1951 to 1953, before returning to Cincinnati's WLW. After a stint in television, he returned to WOR in New York City for an evening program featuring poetry readings and storytelling.
Radio Star
Known for his prankish humor, Shepherd promoted a fictional book called "I, Libertine" by the fictitious author Frederick R. Ewing in 1956. After being fired by WOR for advertising "Sweetheart Soap" without sponsorship, he was reinstated due to listener backlash. Shepherd successfully attracted new sponsors, but eventually left WOR in 1977 due to excessive commercial interruptions.
Writer and Television Host
Shepherd published a series of humorous short stories about growing up in Indiana, which appeared in "Playboy" magazine. They were later collected into books such as "In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash" and "Wanda Hickey's Night of Golden Memories."
On television, Shepherd hosted a short-lived weekly show on WOR in the 1960s. From 1971 to 1994, he worked as a writer on both film and television projects. He also hosted his own programs, including "Jean Shepherd's America" on Boston Public Television, where he shared stories, visited notable locations, and interviewed guests.
Later Years and Legacy
In his later years, Shepherd resided on Sanibel Island, Florida, with his wife Leigh Brown. He passed away peacefully on Sanibel from natural causes. Jean Shepherd's unique blend of humor, storytelling, and radio personality made him an unforgettable figure in American entertainment.
