Academic and Professional Beginnings

Born in 1936, Delamuraz studied political science at the University of Lausanne, graduating in 1960. He subsequently served as Deputy Director of the Swiss National Exhibition in Lausanne from 1961 to 1964.

Political Ascent

Delamuraz's political career began in earnest in 1965 with his appointment as Secretary of the Free Democratic Party in the canton of Vaud. He was elected to the Municipal Council of Lausanne the same year, and from 1969 to 1981, he served as a member of the City Council. In 1974, he became Mayor of Lausanne.

National and Federal Roles

Expanding his influence, Delamuraz was elected to the Cantonal Council of Vaud in 1981. Over the next two years, he led the department responsible for agriculture, industry, and trade. Simultaneously, he served as a member of the National Council, the lower house of the Swiss parliament, from 1975 to 1983.

On December 7, 1983, Delamuraz was elected to the Federal Council, Switzerland's seven-member executive body. He remained a member until his untimely resignation in 1998 due to declining health.
