Countess of Rethel: A Noble Lineage
Jeanne, born as the Countess of Rethel, was the daughter of Hugh IV, Count of Rethel, and Isabella of Grandpré. She stood as the only child from her father's third marriage to Isabella.
Marriage to Louis I of Nevers
On December 16, 1290, Jeanne married Louis I of Nevers, a member of the House of Dampierre. Together, they welcomed two children:
- Jeanne de Dampierre (1295-1374), who married John IV, Count of Montfort, and bore two children
- Louis (1304-1346), who became Count of Flanders, Nevers, and Rethel. He married Margaret of Artois and had one legitimate son.
Louis I's Conflicts and Legacy
Louis I spent much of his reign engaging in conflicts with the French monarchy, fiercely defending the independence of his territories. He passed away in Paris in 1322.
Jeanne's Son and Flanders
Jeanne's son, Louis of Nevers, inherited his father's title as Count of Nevers. Two months later, upon inheriting from his grandfather, he also became Count of Flanders. Under his rule, Flanders experienced a significant shift towards becoming a province of France. Following an uprising by his subjects in 1325, Louis was forced to flee. He returned three years later with support from the French army.
Jeanne's Passing and Legacy
Jeanne of Rethel passed away after March 12, 1328. Her daughter, Jeanne, who became known as Jeanne de Montfort, played a pivotal role in the War of the Breton Succession.
