In 1950, Dorji accompanied the future king while he resided in the United Kingdom. Upon his return, Dorji was appointed Gongzim (Chief Minister) in 1952. In 1958, Dorji became Bhutan's first-ever Prime Minister (Lonchen) as part of reforms introduced by King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck.
