Early Life and Football Beginnings

Johanne Djourou, a Swiss footballer of Ivorian descent, was born in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, to Ivorian parents Joachim and Angeline. At 17 months, he was adopted by his father's first wife, Daniele, from Switzerland, and moved to Geneva. Djourou began playing football at age 13 and joined local Swiss club Étoile Carouge in 2002 as a midfielder.

Transfer to Arsenal

A year later, Djourou signed a professional contract with Arsenal. He featured for Switzerland's U-19 team, reaching the semifinals of the 2004 UEFA European Under-19 Championship.

Arsenal Career

Djourou made his Arsenal debut in a 3-1 League Cup victory over Everton in 2005, coming on as an 89th-minute substitute. He played his first full match on January 14, 2006, partnering Philippe Senderos in central defense during a 7-0 win over Middlesbrough. Djourou established himself as a regular starter in 2006, playing in league matches against West Ham United, Birmingham City, Bolton Wanderers, and Aston Villa. After the 2006 World Cup, he signed a six-year contract with Arsenal, despite interest from Italian clubs.

Loan Spells and Return to Arsenal

In 2007, Djourou joined Birmingham City on a five-month loan spell. He made his debut in a 3-2 loss to Chelsea. After returning to Arsenal, he played as a defensive cover for Kolo Touré and Alex Song during their participation in the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations. In May 2008, Djourou expressed his desire to play in midfield, seeing himself as a physical presence similar to Patrick Vieira.

Injuries and Loan Moves

Djourou sustained a serious knee injury in April 2009 and missed the remainder of the season. He made his comeback in the 2010/11 season, featuring in a 4-0 win over Fulham. In January 2013, Djourou joined Hannover 96 on loan, followed by a loan spell at Hamburg in 2013/14. Hamburg eventually signed him from Arsenal for €3 million.

International Career

Djourou made his Swiss youth team debut in a match against Scotland, partnering Senderos in defense. He was included in Switzerland's 2006 World Cup squad despite not featuring in qualifying. After playing in the starting lineup against Ukraine, Djourou was injured and replaced. He was not selected for the 2010 World Cup due to a knee injury.
