Early Life and Military Service
Johan Kock was born in Finland and attended military school. Upon graduation, he served as an officer in the 8th Vyborg Finnish Rifle Battalion. He retired in 1896 with the rank of Staff Captain.
Social Activism and the Social Democratic Party
Kock became a member of the Finnish Social Democratic Party, actively involved in the political scene.
Leader of the "Red Guard" (1905)
During the 1905 general strike in Helsinki, Kock was appointed commander of the newly formed "National Guard," which later became known as the "Red Guard." The guard replaced the police and maintained order in Helsinki for several months.
Split within the National Guard (1906)
Kock remained in command of the Red Guard even after Swedish-Finnish nationalists established the rival "White Guard."
Sveaborg Uprising and Exile (1906)
In 1906, Kock played a role in the Sveaborg Uprising, issuing a call for a general strike. After the uprising was suppressed, he went into hiding and later emigrated to America.
