Early Life and Activism
Johanne Schmidt-Nielsen is a Danish politician from the Red-Green Alliance, a left-wing political party. Born on the island of Funen, Schmidt-Nielsen has lived in Nørrebro, Copenhagen for many years. Her involvement in politics began in 1997, and she served as Vice-Chair of the Student Council of Danish High Schools from 2002 to 2003.
Entry into Politics
In 2006, Schmidt-Nielsen's activism propelled her into the political arena. She was elected to the executive committee of the Red-Green Alliance at the party's annual meeting, garnering more votes than any other candidate. Her election to this prestigious position paved the way for her future political career.
Parliamentary Elections
In 2007, Schmidt-Nielsen was elected to the Danish Parliament (Folketing) as the lead candidate for the Red-Green Alliance in the Copenhagen constituency. She became the youngest ever candidate to participate in the televised party leaders' debate on TV 2. Despite her youthful age, Schmidt-Nielsen was elected to Parliament with an impressive 8,964 personal votes.
Rise to Prominence
In 2009, Schmidt-Nielsen became the first female spokesperson for the Red-Green Alliance. She was widely regarded as the "new queen of the Red-Green Alliance" by the press. Her political prowess continued to grow, and she was re-elected to Parliament in 2011 and 2015 with even larger majorities. In 2015, she was ranked third in the country in terms of votes received, behind only Kristian Thulesen Dahl and Helle Thorning-Schmidt.
Departure from Politics
Despite her popularity, Schmidt-Nielsen decided to leave Parliament after the 2019 elections. She accepted the position of Secretary General of Save the Children, an international organization dedicated to protecting children's rights. Schmidt-Nielsen's departure from politics marked the end of a remarkable political journey for the young politician.
