Johannes Deiker

Johannes Deiker (1822-1895) was a renowned German painter known for his depictions of wildlife and hunting scenes.

Early Life and Education

Born in Wetzlar, Germany, into a family of artists, Johannes Deiker began studying painting at an early age. His father was an art teacher, and his brother was the animal painter Karl Deiker. Deiker's formal training took place at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main under the guidance of Jakob Becker.

Portraits and the Influence of Prince von Solms-Braunfels

During his early career, Deiker primarily focused on portrait painting. However, upon returning to Wetzlar, he gained the patronage of Prince von Solms-Braunfels. Through this connection, Deiker spent many years living in the prince's castle on the Lahn River.

Wildlife and Hunting Scenes

In the tranquil surroundings of the castle, Deiker's artistic style shifted dramatically. He became captivated by the abundant wildlife in the surrounding forests, particularly deer, fallow deer, and wild boars. Deiker's paintings began to depict these animals in their natural habitat and in hunting scenes.

Move to Düsseldorf and Legacy

In 1868, Deiker relocated to Düsseldorf, where he established a permanent base and continued to produce wildlife-themed works. His paintings became highly acclaimed for their accuracy, detail, and vibrant colors. Deiker passed away on May 23, 1895, leaving behind a rich legacy as one of the most significant wildlife painters of his time.
