Early Life and Political Ascension

Born into a prominent English family, John Carteret embarked on a political career at a young age. At the tender age of 21, he secured a seat in the House of Lords and quickly rose through the ranks of the Whig party.

Opposition to Walpole

As the Whig ministry collapsed in 1717, Carteret emerged as a vocal opponent of Robert Walpole. Despite his initial resistance, he later joined Walpole's cabinet as Minister for the Colonies from 1721 to 1724.

Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and Return to Opposition

In 1727, Carteret was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, a position he held until 1730. However, he subsequently became a leading figure in the opposition against Walpole's ministry.

Foreign Secretary and the War of the Austrian Succession

Following Walpole's downfall in 1742, Carteret was named Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. During the War of the Austrian Succession, he played a pivotal role in shaping British foreign policy.

Influence of Hanoverian Politics

Carteret's susceptibility to the Hanoverian policies of King George II made him increasingly unpopular. He eventually resigned from the cabinet while retaining the king's favor, who appointed him President of the Council.
