James Isaac Heaney Cozens
James Isaac Heaney Cozens was a British artist.Early Career and Caricatures
Cozens initially gained recognition as a caricaturist, particularly for his response to the French coup of 18 Brumaire. His caricature "Satans, returns from Egypt earth. Discovered in Council, with Belzebub & Belial" depicted Napoleon as Satan.
Transition to Portraiture and the Royal Academy
Cozens later shifted his focus to portraiture. From 1801 to 1844, he participated in exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Arts. Among his notable works is the last lifetime portrait of Carl Maria von Weber, now housed in the Royal College of Music.
Artistic Education and Publications
Cozens shared his knowledge through published works. In 1822, he released "Introduction to the Art of Painting in Oil Colours," followed by a more comprehensive treatise in 1840 titled "The Art Of Painting Portraits, Landscapes, Animals, Draperies, Satins &C In Oil Colours: Practically Explained By Coloured Palettes."
Legacy and Influence
Cozens' private studio in Covent Garden became a notable training ground for aspiring artists. Edward Matthew Ward, among others, honed his skills under Cozens' tutelage.
