Early Life and College Career
Jack Cureton, a former professional basketball player, played for the University of North Carolina in the position of shooting guard from 1973 to 1977. He was drafted in the 1977 NBA Draft by the Kansas City Kings.
NBA Playing Career
Cureton spent the 1977-78 season with the Kings and later moved to the Denver Nuggets for the 1978-79 season. He played for the Indiana Pacers during the 1979-80 season.
Coaching Career
After his playing career, Cureton began coaching as an assistant for the men's basketball team at the University of Richmond. He became an assistant coach at Boston University from 1981 to 1983, replacing Rick Pitino as head coach in 1983, making him the youngest head coach in the NCAA's Division I. He led the George Washington University team from 1985 to 1990, but his tenure there was marked by limited success.
NBA Coaching Career
In 1990, Cureton moved to the NBA, serving from 1995 to 1997 on the coaching staff of the Boston Celtics and from 1997 to 2003 with the Philadelphia 76ers under Larry Brown. In the 2003-04 season, he accompanied Brown to the Detroit Pistons. He worked with the New Jersey Nets in the 2004-05 season before returning to the Pistons the following year.
In July 2006, Cureton became an assistant coach for the Orlando Magic and joined the coaching staff of the Cleveland Cavaliers in August 2007. He became an assistant coach for the Detroit Pistons in July 2009 and served as head coach from July 2009 to June 2011.
Later Coaching Career
On July 29, 2011, Cureton joined the coaching staff of the Los Angeles Lakers and became a scout for the team on September 7, 2012.
