John Garibaldi Sargent

Early Life and Education

John Garibaldi Sargent was born on October 13, 1860, in Ludlow, Vermont, to John Hemon Sargent and Ann Eliza Hanley. He attended Black River Academy in his hometown and later earned a bachelor's degree from Tufts College in 1887.

Legal Career

After studying law at a law firm in Ludlow, Sargent was admitted to the bar in 1890. He became a partner in a firm founded by William W. Stickney, a cousin of Calvin Coolidge, the 30th president of the United States. Sargent also held various legal positions, including Windsor County State's Attorney and Attorney General of Vermont.

Attorney General of Vermont

From 1908 to 1912, Sargent served as Attorney General of Vermont. During his tenure, he was awarded an honorary master's degree from Tufts College.

Attorney General of the United States

In 1925, President Coolidge nominated Charles B. Warren for the position of Attorney General of the United States. However, the Senate rejected Warren's nomination. Coolidge then turned to Sargent, whom he knew from their childhood. Sargent was unanimously confirmed and served as Attorney General from 1925 to 1929.

Later Life

After leaving office, Sargent returned to legal practice. He also chaired a Vermont commission on critical areas of state statute law and served as a trustee of Black River Academy. John G. Sargent died in Ludlow on March 5, 1939, and was buried in Pleasant View Cemetery.

Honors and Legacy

In recognition of his achievements, Sargent received honorary doctorates of law from Tufts College, Norwich University, Middlebury College, and Dartmouth College. He was survived by his wife, Mary Lorraine Gordon, and their daughter, Gladys Gordon Sargent.
