Biography of John Jacob Astor V
John Jacob Astor V was a British entrepreneur, politician, and athlete, as well as a champion and medalist in the Summer Olympics. He hailed from the prominent Astor family in America and was a descendant of John Jacob Astor. In 1889, he and his family relocated to the United Kingdom, where he became a British citizen.
Early Life and Sporting Achievements
During his education at Eton College, Astor excelled in the sport of cricket. He also participated in the rackets competition at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London, where he became the champion in the doubles category and won a bronze medal in the singles category.
Military Service and Personal Life
After a brief period of study at the University of Oxford, Astor enlisted in the military. He served as part of the security detail for the Governor-General of India, Charles Hardinge, and later married his daughter. Unfortunately, Astor lost his right leg during World War I in September 1918.
Political Career and Ownership of "The Times"
In 1922, Astor became the owner of the newspaper "The Times" and also served as a Member of Parliament for Dover. His contribution to journalism and politics earned him the title of Baron in 1956. However, six years later, Astor relocated to France, where he resided until the end of his life.
