John Wodehouse, 1st Earl of Kimberley
Early Life and InheritanceJohn Wodehouse was a British statesman born into a noble family. He inherited the title Baron Wodehouse in 1846.
Diplomatic Career
In 1856, Wodehouse was appointed British Ambassador to Saint Petersburg, a position he held until 1858. He played a key role in international diplomacy during this period.
Lord Lieutenant of Ireland
From 1864 to 1866, Wodehouse served as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, a position responsible for governing the country on behalf of the British Crown.
Gladstone's Cabinets
Wodehouse held various ministerial positions in all of William Ewart Gladstone's Governments. He served as Lord Privy Seal, Secretary of State for the Colonies, and Secretary of State for India.
Earldom and State Service
In 1866, Wodehouse was elevated to the peerage as the Earl of Kimberley in recognition of his distinguished public service.
