A Journey from the Animal Kingdom to Capitol Hill
Early Life and EducationCynthia Lummis, a Wyoming native, graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science in Zoology. Two years later, she earned another Bachelor of Science, this time in Biology, from the same institution. Driven by a passion for justice, she pursued a Juris Doctor degree at the University of Wyoming and received it in 1985 while serving as a clerk for the Wyoming Supreme Court.
Early Political Career in Wyoming
Lummis entered the political arena in 1979, serving in the Wyoming House of Representatives from 1979 to 1983 and from 1985 to 1993. Her service continued in the Wyoming Senate from 1993 to 1995. Her expertise in land management led her to the position of Director of the Wyoming Office of State Lands and Investments from 1997 to 1998.
Ascent to State Office
In 1999, Lummis was elected State Treasurer of Wyoming, holding the office until 2007. During her tenure, she demonstrated her fiscal prudence and accountability. Subsequently, in 2009, she entered the national political scene by representing Wyoming as a member of the United States House of Representatives, serving from 2009 to 2017.
Return to the Senate and Beyond
In 2021, Lummis was elected to the United States Senate, returning to the legislative body where her journey began. As a senator, she has been a staunch advocate for Wyoming's interests, focusing on energy policy, natural resource management, and economic development.
