John Tefft: A Distinguished Career in Diplomacy
Formative Years and Early CareerBorn in Madison, Wisconsin, in 1949, John Tefft is an esteemed diplomat who has devoted his career to advancing United States foreign policy, particularly in Europe and Eurasia. After graduating with a bachelor's degree from Marquette University and a master's degree in history from Georgetown University, Tefft joined the United States Department of State in 1972.
Senior Roles in the State Department
Throughout his tenure at the State Department, Tefft held key positions responsible for managing U.S. relations with various regions. As the Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs from 1989 to 1992, he oversaw policies towards the Soviet Union and its successor states. Subsequently, from 2004 onwards, he served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs, overseeing U.S. engagements with Ukraine, Russia, Moldova, and Belarus.
Ambassadorial Appointments
Tefft's expertise in European and Eurasian affairs culminated in his ambassadorial appointments. From 2005 to 2009, he served as Ambassador to Georgia, where he played a pivotal role in strengthening U.S.-Georgian relations. On September 30, 2009, President Barack Obama appointed him Ambassador to Ukraine. During his tenure in Kyiv, he navigated complex geopolitical challenges and supported Ukraine's aspirations for closer integration with the West.
Other Diplomatic Assignments
Beyond his ambassadorial roles, Tefft has held various other diplomatic posts. He served as Political-Military Advisor to the U.S. Ambassador to Italy from 1986 to 1989. He also represented the United States at the START arms control negotiations in 1985. Notably, he played a significant role in Lithuania as U.S. Ambassador, receiving accolades for resolving difficult issues and assisting in the country's decision-making in key areas.
Honors and Recognition
Tefft's diplomatic accomplishments have been recognized with numerous awards, including the State Department Distinguished Honor Award (1992), the DCM of the Year Award for his work at the U.S. Embassy in Russia (1999), and two Presidential Meritorious Service Awards (2001 and 2005).
Personal Life
Tefft is married to Mariella, a former nurse and biostatistician. They have two daughters, one a lawyer and the other in the entertainment industry.
