Biography of Johnny Grunge

Michael Durham (July 10, 1966 – February 16, 2006), known by his ring name Johnny Grunge, was an American professional wrestler. He gained fame through his partnership with Rocco Rock in the tag team 'The Public Enemy.'

Early Life and Career

Michael Durham was born on July 10, 1966. He began his wrestling career in the early 1990s, initially using the ring name 'Johnny Rotten.' In 1991, he competed against Rocco Rock, who was known as 'Cheetah' at the time, in Austria, and was defeated.

In 1993, Durham and Rocco Rock formed the tag team 'The Public Enemy' in Woodbridge, New Jersey. They joined the Eastern Championship Wrestling (ECW) and later became part of the Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) when it underwent a name change. From March 6, 1994, to October 28, 1995, they won the ECW Tag Team Championship four times.

Notable Moments and WCW

The Public Enemy garnered attention for their wild and unpredictable style. They were involved in incidents where the audience threw chairs at them and rushed into the ring to congratulate them, causing the ring to collapse.

In 1996, The Public Enemy moved to Atlanta, Georgia, and competed in World Championship Wrestling (WCW). They made their WCW debut on January 15 and won the WCW Tag Team Championship in September. However, they lost the title just a week later.

Later Career and Personal Life

After leaving WCW in 1999 and briefly returning to ECW, The Public Enemy worked on independent projects and participated in the 'i-Generation Superstars of Wrestling' matches in the early 2000s. They achieved considerable success and won several titles.

After Rocco Rock's death in 2002, Johnny Grunge formed a new tag team called 'The New Public Enemy' with his 'brother' Joey Grunge. Grunge resided next door to wrestler Chris Benoit and provided support to Benoit after the death of Eddie Guerrero in November 2005.

In 2006, Johnny Grunge planned a return to the mainstream wrestling industry; however, in February of that year, he tragically passed away from apnea, a sleep disorder causing temporary breathing cessation. He was only 39 years old. Grunge is survived by his wife Penney and their two children.
