Jorge Sampaio: President of Portugal and Advocate for Global Health
Early Life and EducationBorn in Lisbon, Portugal in 1939, Jorge Sampaio pursued his higher education at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon, graduating in 1961.
Political Career
Sampaio entered politics in 1978 as a member of the Socialist Party of Portugal. He held various positions within the party, including its chairmanship from 1989 to 1991.
Presidency of Portugal
In 1996, Sampaio was elected President of the Portuguese Republic. He served two terms, being re-elected in 2001. During his presidency, he played a pivotal role in Portugal's accession to the European Union and promoted social and economic reforms.
Post-Presidency
Following the end of his second presidential term in 2006, Sampaio was appointed Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for the Global Plan to Combat Tuberculosis. In this role, he worked tirelessly to raise awareness and mobilize support for the fight against the disease.
International Recognition
Sampaio's work on global health earned him numerous accolades. He was awarded the Order of the Sun by the Government of Peru in 2007 and the Global Citizen Award by the United Nations High-Level Panel on Global Sustainability in 2012.
Personal Life
Sampaio is married and has two children. He is an avid runner and has participated in the Lisbon Half Marathon.
