Admiral George Dewey was an American admiral who played a significant role in the overthrow of Spanish rule in the Philippines. He was born on December 26, 1837. Dewey gained fame for his battles against the Spanish in the Philippines, which ultimately led to the overthrow of Spanish authority after his victory in the Battle of Manila Bay in 1898.

Dewey commanded the Asiatic Squadron when the Secretary of the Navy, Theodore Roosevelt, ordered him to proceed to Hong Kong and prepare for military actions in the Philippines. On May 1, 1898, Dewey's ships entered Manila Bay, where the admiral famously issued the order to the captain of his flagship, "You may fire when ready, Gridley." Dewey's rapid-fire guns decimated the Spanish fleet.


Admiral George Dewey passed away on January 16, 1917. His leadership and victories in the Philippines remain a significant part of American naval history.
