Born in 1910, Klaus joined the conservative Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) in 1945. His political career began with his election as Governor of Salzburg in 1949, a position he held until 1961.

Rise to Prominence

Under Chancellor Julius Raab, Klaus held the post of Federal Minister of Finance from 1961 to 1964. His appointment was seen as a testament to his reputation as a "young reformer."

Chancellorship

In 1964, Klaus succeeded Alfons Gorbach as Chancellor. He formed a coalition government with the Social Democrats, leading the ÖVP to electoral victory.

Klaus's tenure as Chancellor was marked by significant reforms, including a landmark agreement with the European Community. This agreement paved the way for Austria's eventual accession to the European Union in 1995.
