Early Life and EducationJoseph Larmor was born on July 11, 1857, in Antrim, Northern Ireland. He displayed exceptional academic ability from a young age and pursued studies in physics and mathematics at Queen's College, Belfast.
Academic Career
In 1880, Larmor joined the faculty of Queen's College, Cork. He made significant contributions to the fields of electromagnetism, thermodynamics, and optics. In 1903, he was appointed as the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge, a position he held until 1932.
Scientific Achievements
Larmor's most notable scientific achievement was his formulation of the Lorentz transformation in 1897, two years prior to Lorentz and eight years before Einstein. This fundamental concept paved the way for the development of special relativity.
