J.R. Giddens: An NBA Journey
J.R. Giddens is an American professional basketball player who currently plays for the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association (NBA).
College Career
After graduating high school, Giddens received an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Kansas, where he played for the basketball team under the guidance of coach Roy Williams. When Williams left, new coach Bill Self convinced Giddens to remain with the team. In his freshman season for Kansas, Giddens averaged 11 points per game and earned Big 12 All-Freshman Team honors.
However, in May 2005, Giddens was stabbed in an altercation he initiated. He was given a year's probation and subsequently transferred to the University of New Mexico. NCAA regulations forced him to sit out one season before he could play basketball again. Giddens finished his college career as a senior at New Mexico, averaging 16.3 points and 8.8 rebounds per game while earning co-Mountain West Player of the Year honors.
NBA Career
Giddens was selected 30th overall by the Boston Celtics in the 2008 NBA Draft. He spent part of his rookie season with the Utah Flash of the NBA Development League and made six regular-season appearances for the Celtics. On February 18, 2010, he was traded to the New York Knicks.
Since joining the Knicks, Giddens has played a role in several seasons, providing depth and energy off the bench. His versatility as a wing player has allowed him to contribute in a variety of ways, including scoring, rebounding, and defense.
