Club CareerSalvadoran midfielder Mario Martínez began his professional career with Águila FC, where he spent six seasons, securing two league titles. In 1971, he joined Juventud Olímpica, winning another championship. The following year, Martínez moved to Guatemala, playing for Municipal.
International Career
Martínez represented El Salvador at the 1968 Olympic Games, where his team finished last in their group. He also played in the 1970 FIFA World Cup, featuring in two group stage matches against Belgium and Mexico. Overall, he accumulated 32 international caps and scored 14 goals for his country.
Later Career and Legacy
In 1973, Martínez emigrated to the United States, playing for the Indiana Tigers before returning home in 1974 to join Alianza FC for two seasons. He went on to play for Once Municipal (1976-79), Once Lobos (1980-81), and Atlético Marte, with whom he won a league title in 1982. Martínez retired from professional soccer at age 34 while playing for Marte.
Death
The legendary Mario Martínez passed away on August 4, 2024, at the age of 76.
