Biography of Jules Wijdenbosch

Jules Wijdenbosch is a Surinamese politician who served twice as Vice President of Suriname, from 1991 to 1996 and 2000 to 2005.

Early Life and Education

Wijdenbosch was born in District Suriname (now Wanica) on November 27, 1945. He graduated from the Faculty of Law at Anton de Kom University of Suriname. From 1996 to 2000, he taught constitutional and administrative law at his alma mater.

Political Career

As a member of the Arya Dewaker, a prominent Indo-Surinamese organization, Wijdenbosch served as president of its Suriname branch for several years. From 1978 to 1988, he held the position of District Commissioner (Head of District). Subsequently, from 1988 to 1990, he served as Minister of Justice and Police.

First Vice Presidency (1991-1996)

Following the 1991 elections that occurred after the Telephone Coup, Wijdenbosch became Vice President of Suriname and served in that role from 1991 to 1996. He also concurrently held the position of Chairman of the Council of Ministers. Priorities of Wijdenbosch's government included ending the civil war, reducing the Surinamese military from 4,000 to 2,000 troops, and nominating Desi Bouterse for the presidency.

Second Vice Presidency (2000-2005)

In 2000, he was elected Vice President of Suriname for the second time, serving until 2005. During President Venetiaan's administration, the trial of suspects in the December Murders commenced.

Continued Political Engagement

After the May 25, 2005 elections, Wijdenbosch joined the Progressive Reform Party of Suriname. Despite his advanced age, he remains politically active in the country.

Personal Life

Wijdenbosch is married to Lucia, née Kamlawatie-Baldew. He is the father of three children—a son and two daughters.
