Julia Kassabova: Pioneering Bulgarian Sailor and Politician
Early Life and CareerJulia Kassabova was born into a prominent political family. Her father, Grigor Gorkovski, was a leader of the Bulgarian Agrarian National Union party. Following the communist takeover in 1944, her father was imprisoned for 11 years. Kassabova pursued a career in music, graduating from the State Conservatory. She worked as a sound engineer and music editor at the "Time" studio for popular science films.
Sailing and Exploration
In 1972, Kassabova married fellow sailor Doncho Papazov. Together, they embarked on a series of daring expeditions, including:
- 1972: Sailed from Bulgaria to Sochi on a lifeboat during the "Plankton" expedition.
- 1974: Crossed the Atlantic Ocean from Bulgaria to Cuba on a lifeboat with a sail.
- 1976: Sailed across the Pacific Ocean from Lima, Peru to Suva, Fiji.
World Records
Kassabova and Papazov achieved two world records:- Longest time spent on board a lifeboat (191 days)
- Greatest number of nautical miles sailed on a lifeboat (14,000)
Circumnavigations and Eurovoyage
In 1978, Kassabova sailed around Europe with her husband, daughter, and Simeon Idakiev on the "Tiviya" yacht. From 1979-1981, she completed a circumnavigation with her husband and seven-year-old daughter Yana on the same yacht.
Political Career
After divorcing Papazov in 1989, Kassabova returned to her maiden name. She served as chief of staff to President Zhelyu Zhelev from 1992 to 1996. From 1996 to 2001, she held various positions at the Center for Liberal Strategies in Sofia.
Legacy
Julia Kassabova passed away in 2001 from cancer. She is remembered as a pioneering sailor who pushed the boundaries of human endurance and as a significant figure in Bulgarian politics.
